TACE THERAPY

A Precision Approach to Liver Cancer Care

Targeted • Minimally Invasive • Personalised

Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE) is an advanced, image-guided treatment designed to target liver tumours with exceptional precision.

Unlike conventional chemotherapy, which circulates throughout the entire body, TACE delivers treatment directly to the tumour's blood supply, allowing for a highly focused and personalised approach.

HOW TACE WORKS

Step 1 – Precision Access

A specialist Interventional Radiologist carefully guides a fine catheter through an artery in the wrist or groin to reach the blood vessels supplying the tumour.

Step 2 – Targeted Therapy

A concentrated dose of chemotherapy is delivered directly into the tumour's feeding artery, achieving significantly higher local drug concentrations while reducing exposure to healthy tissues.

Step 3 – Blood Supply Interruption

Specialised embolisation particles are then introduced to block the tumour's blood supply.

This helps to:

• Trap the treatment within the tumour
• Restrict oxygen and nutrient delivery
• Slow tumour growth
• Promote tumour cell destruction

WHY THIS APPROACH IS DIFFERENT

Liver tumours receive most of their blood supply from the hepatic artery, while healthy liver tissue relies primarily on the portal vein.

This unique anatomy allows physicians to selectively target cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy liver function as possible.

WHO MAY BENEFIT?

TACE is commonly considered for individuals with:

• Primary liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma)
• Colorectal cancer liver metastases
• Breast cancer liver metastases
• Pancreatic cancer liver metastases
• Neuroendocrine tumours affecting the liver
• Other liver-dominant metastatic cancers

Every patient is individually assessed to determine suitability.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

Precision Treatment

Delivering therapy directly to the tumour site.

Reduced Systemic Exposure

Less chemotherapy reaches the rest of the body compared with traditional intravenous treatment.

Repeatable Therapy

TACE can often be repeated when clinically appropriate.

Integrated Care

May be combined with systemic therapies, immunotherapy, surgery or thermal ablation techniques.

Quality of Life

Many patients experience meaningful disease control while maintaining daily activities and independence.

THE FRANKFURT APPROACH

Professor Thomas J. Vogl and his team at Frankfurt University Hospital are internationally recognised leaders in Interventional Oncology.

Their philosophy extends beyond a single treatment procedure.

Each patient receives an individualised treatment strategy that may combine:

• TACE
• Microwave Ablation (MWA)
• Laser-Induced Thermotherapy (LITT)
• Immunotherapy
• Systemic Cancer Treatments
• Personalised Liver-Directed Therapies

The goal is to achieve optimal tumour control while preserving quality of life and supporting long-term outcomes.

A PERSONALISED JOURNEY

TACE is not simply a procedure—it is part of a carefully designed treatment pathway.

Every recommendation is tailored to the individual, taking into account:

• Cancer type and stage
• Tumour location and burden
• Previous treatments
• Overall health and liver function
• Personal treatment goals
